The use of drones has been rapidly growing in the past years. They are used for a variety of applications but their main objective is always surveillance. Drones are now even equipped with Artificial Intelligence which makes them more efficient as well as safer. They have an increased ability to see and record in areas that were previously inaccessible. Drones can be easily spotted from the sky, which often leads to public alarm regarding their purpose. Drones are being used for private security, law enforcement, public utilities like power companies, and maintenance services for pipelines and other infrastructure projects such as toll roads, bridges, and tunnels. However, this article will focus on the use of drones for surveillance purposes only.

Surveillance is the process of observing or tracking a specific target over a period of time. A surveillance system may be used for a number of reasons such as to observe/track/monitor assets in order to maintain security, investigate crimes, or enforce regulatory compliance. In recent years, there has been a growing trend of using drones for surveillance. The advantage of using drones for surveillance is that it is more cost-efficient and more reliable than other methods. Surveillance drones are generally used to keep a watch on the movement of people, animals, or assets. If you are wondering what are the most common uses of drones for surveillance, then read ahead.

What is surveillance?

Surveillance can be defined as the act of observing and tracking someone or something. It is also an established area of interest in various disciplines like computing, engineering, science, social science, and many more. This article will focus on the use of drones for surveillance purposes only.

There are various drones available in the market which are specifically designed for surveillance. These drones are equipped with various high-tech sensors that can be used for various purposes. These sensors may be used to detect movements, identify objects, measure the distance between things, and much more. As per the use of these drones, we generally divide them into 3 categories; – Professional drones – These are the ones that are used for large-scale surveillance and are equipped with high-end sensors for a sophisticated level of surveillance. These drones are generally expensive and have a limited number of uses. – Civilian drones – These are the ones that are smaller in size, cheaper, and are mostly used for recreational purposes. Civilian drones are not equipped with high-end sensors but may be used for security purposes. – Other drones – These are generally the ones that are used for surveillance purposes. However, they are mostly used for other purposes like carrying a payload, aerial filming, surveillance of infrastructure, etc.

Drone Cameras – Drone cameras are generally used for surveillance purposes. These cameras may be used along with other sensors like thermal imaging, radar, etc. These cameras are generally equipped with high-resolution, high-quality sensors and are good for surveillance purposes. Drone cameras are also available in various models, features, and price ranges. Cameras for FPV – These are also referred to as First Person View cameras and are used for FPV. FPV is an abbreviation for First Person View. FPV cameras are generally used for live streaming to the remote pilot. These cameras give a real-time view of the drone’s surroundings and may be used along with other sensors. Fully Automated System – These are generally used for complex surveillance purposes. These systems are generally used alongside other sensors like radar, infrared cameras, etc. These systems are generally used on large scale and are very reliable.

Conclusion

Now that you are aware of the various types of drones used for surveys surveillance, it is time to know how they are used. You can divide drones in 3 categories; – Professional drones – These are the ones that are used for large-scale surveillance and are equipped with high-end sensors for sophisticated levels of surveillance.
